The finish is the trick: full, gently warming, almost whisky-soft as the oak lingers. Far rounder than your average bright, dry gin.

Unit 43 is a small family distillery in Ndabeni, Cape Town, started in 2018 by two mates, Jason and Bruno. The 43 is a triple in-joke: Jason's age when they launched, the 43% strength they bottle at, and their old workshop address. Their copper still, named Sylvia after the mothers who raised them, was welded together from reclaimed scrap. The recipe took over 200 trial batches to nail, built around wild Cape fynbos botanicals like buchu, confetti bush and wild rosemary, with juniper, citrus and grains of paradise. This one then gets rested on oak for that amber tint and mellow finish. Their whole thing is 'find the best ingredients, refine them into something worth drinking.'
