Picture the last hour of a long night. Plates cleared, no rush to be anywhere, and you want one small glass that tastes like a treat. This is it. Valdouro Ruby is deep, sweet and loaded with ripe dark fruit, the kind of pour that makes a square of dark chocolate or a hunk of cheese feel like an event. A little goes a long way, so one bottle stretches across plenty of slow evenings.
Pour it and the colour gives it away: deep, glossy ruby. The nose is all ripe blackberry and dark cherry, with a soft hint of oak sitting behind the fruit. First sip is properly sweet and full-bodied, like blackberry and plum jam with a warm glow from the brandy underneath. It is rich without being heavy-handed, and it finishes smooth and a touch spiced. Think of it as dessert in a glass rather than something to neck by the pint.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes out of Portugal's Douro Valley, the steep terraced river country where port has been made for centuries. The grapes are the classic Douro crew, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Barroca, grown on rocky schist soils. Mid-ferment they stop the wine with a hit of grape brandy, which keeps the natural sweetness and bumps up the strength. Then it rests in oak for at least three years to round it off. Valdouro is made by the long-running Krohn house, an old name in the port world based in Vila Nova de Gaia across the river from Porto.
