Picture a pale rosé that smells like a flower shop and tastes like ripe grapes off the vine. That's this. It's sweet, it's soft, it goes down dangerously easy, and at 12% it won't flatten you. Get it properly cold, pour it on a hot Nairobi evening or alongside something sugary after dinner, and you'll get why people keep coming back to it. No fuss, no swirl-and-sniff ceremony. Just a genuinely lovely, easygoing pink.
First thing that hits you is the nose: rose petals and honeysuckle, that unmistakable perfumed Muscat lift, like fresh flowers. Then the sip lands sweet and juicy. Think ripe Muscat grape, raspberry and wild strawberry, a little honey, a whisper of citrus to keep it from going cloying. The body's light and soft, the finish lingers sweet but clean. It's a wine that smells fancy and drinks like a treat.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from Van Loveren, down in the Robertson Valley in South Africa's Western Cape. It's the country's largest family-owned winery, run by the Retief family since 1937, when Hennie Retief named the farm after Christina van Loveren, an ancestor of his bride. These days four cousins (yes, all called Retief) run the show. The wine itself is a Blanc de Noir, which is a clever trick: it's pressed from red Muscadel grapes but the juice only kisses the skins for about half an hour, just long enough to pull out that pretty blush colour without going full red. Hence pink wine from a red grape.

- What does Van Loveren Blanc de Noir Red Muscadel 75cl taste like?
