Pour this and you get a glass of vibrant ruby that smells like dark chocolate and ripe plum. It's a South African red that doesn't make you work for it: soft, juicy, generous, with just enough grip to keep things interesting. Grabbing some nyama choma or firing up a late dinner? This is the bottle. We'll have it at your door fast, whatever the hour.
The nose is all ripe dark fruit. Think plum, black cherry, a little berry jam, with a whisper of dark chocolate sitting underneath. On the palate it's smooth and rounded, that juicy fruit out front, with soft tannins that grip just gently and a fresh line of acidity keeping it lively. The Shiraz brings the spicy, peppery edge and the Pinotage piles on the dark berry richness. It's unwooded, so no heavy oak getting in the way, just fruit and a silky finish that lingers.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from Van Loveren, a family estate in the Robertson Valley in South Africa's Cape Winelands. The Retief family has farmed here since 1937, and there's a sweet story behind the name: the founder named the farm after Christina van Loveren, an ancestor of his bride, who sailed from Holland back in 1699. These days it's one of the country's biggest family-owned wineries, still run by the next generation of Retiefs, the so-called Four Cousins. They know how to make a red that just works.
