Welmoed is a Stellenbosch name with serious mileage, the farm was first granted back in 1690. The name itself means roughly "good courage" in old Dutch, the story goes it was coined when a local stood his ground against a corrupt governor and people said the man "does have courage." These days the wines come out of the Welmoed cellar under Stellenbosch Vineyards, made mostly from Stellenbosch fruit. This Chardonnay is part of their handcrafted single-varietal range, with a portion aged in French oak for that gentle creamy edge.
