Pour this one for the night you don't want to overthink. Windhoek Draught is smooth, gently malty and goes down clean, the kind of beer you can keep ordering through a long table of nyama choma without it ever getting heavy. Four percent, brewed to an old German purity rule with literally three things in it. Cold one, good company, sorted.
First sip is soft and a touch sweet, like fresh bread crust, thanks to a long, slow cold-conditioning that rounds off any rough edges. The bitterness is light, just enough hop to keep it lively, and the bubbles are gentle rather than sharp. It finishes a shade sweeter and smoother than the regular Windhoek Lager, clean enough that you go straight back for the next mouthful. No weird aftertaste, nothing trying too hard.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This is Namibia in a bottle, brewed by Namibia Breweries up in Windhoek. The brewery traces back to 1920, when German settlers set up shop in what was then South West Africa and brought their brewing rulebook with them. That rulebook is the Reinheitsgebot, a 1516 purity law that says beer gets malted barley, hops and water and nothing else. No additives, no shortcuts, no adjuncts like corn or rice. A century later they're still doing it that way.
