It pours a clean honey amber and the nose hits first: dried fruit, a dusting of cocoa, a little mint and orange, with a faint whisper of vanilla and tobacco underneath. Then the sip. It's rich and almost creamy, rolling over your tongue with toffee, caramel, dark chocolate and a gentle cinnamon warmth. The famous bit is that Woodford reckons there are over 200 flavour notes in here, and you genuinely catch new ones each time. The finish is long, warm and satisfying, no harsh burn, just a slow fade.

This comes off one of the most beautiful spots in Kentucky, the Woodford Reserve Distillery near Versailles, built on a distilling site that dates back to 1812. The cool trick here is the copper pot stills: Woodford is the only distillery on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail that triple-distills its bourbon in copper pots imported from Scotland, the same way Scotch is made. Mash it from 72% corn, 18% rye and 10% malt, age it at least six years in charred oak, and you get this. Smooth, layered, and unmistakably itself.
