Pour this and the room goes a little more grown-up. It's a red Bordeaux from the Médoc, all blackcurrant and cedar with tannins that grip just enough to make you slow down and pay attention. This is the bottle you open when there's a steak on the grill or you actually want to talk to the person across the table. Got nyama choma on the go tonight? Say no more. We'll get it to you fast, whatever the hour.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

First sniff is dark fruit. Blackcurrant, a little plum, then that classic Médoc whisper of cedar and pencil shavings underneath (the posh word is 'graphite', it just means it smells handsomely woody). On the palate it's medium to full, dry, with firm but fine tannins that dry your mouth in a good way and a savoury, almost gravelly edge that keeps it serious. It finishes clean and lingers. A wine with a bit of backbone, not a fruit bomb.

Where it's from

This comes from Maison Cruse, one of Bordeaux's old guard. The house was set up back in 1819 (hence the name) by Herman Cruse, a merchant who landed on the quai des Chartrons and built one of the great Bordeaux wine-trading names of the 19th century. The grapes are from the Médoc, the left-bank strip north of the city famous for gravelly soils and Cabernet-led reds. So you're drinking the Bordeaux blueprint, made by a name that helped write it.

What does 1819 Cruse Bordeaux Médoc Reserve 75cl taste like?

Dry and medium to full bodied, with blackcurrant and plum, a cedar and pencil-lead note, and firm fine tannins. Classic left-bank Bordeaux. Structured and savoury rather than sweet or jammy.

What is the ABV of 1819 Cruse Bordeaux Médoc Reserve?

It's 13% ABV, in a standard 750ml (75cl) bottle.

How do I serve it?

Cool-ish, around 16 to 18°C, in a big red wine glass. Let it breathe 20 to 30 minutes first so the tannins relax and the fruit comes out.

What food pairs with it?

Anything off the grill. Nyama choma, steak, roast lamb, beef stew, or a hunk of aged cheddar. The tannins love a bit of fat and char.

What grapes is it made from?

A traditional Bordeaux blend, left-bank style, led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot. That's where the structure and the blackcurrant-and-cedar character come from.

Where is it from?

The Médoc in Bordeaux, France, made by Maison Cruse, a Bordeaux wine house going since 1819.
