ANGELO Montelpuciano D' Abruzzo Red 75cl
Pour this and you get a big glug of dark, juicy fruit. Plum, black cherry, a little peppery spice, soft tannins that don't fight you. It's the kind of red you open without overthinking it, the one that makes a random weeknight pizza feel like an occasion. Dry, smooth, friendly. Say the word and we'll have it at your door tonight.
Deep ruby in the glass, almost inky. The nose is generous and fruity: ripe plum, black cherry, a handful of raspberry, with a little black pepper and a whisper of vanilla underneath. On the palate it's smooth and round, medium-bodied, with juicy dark fruit up front and a gentle savoury, almost coffee-edged grip on the finish. The tannins are soft and the spice lingers a touch. Easy to drink, but there's enough structure here to stand up to real food.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from Abruzzo, a rugged, mountainous stretch of east-central Italy that runs from the Apennine peaks down to the Adriatic coast. It's made from Montepulciano, the local red grape (don't confuse it with the Tuscan town of the same name, classic Italian naming chaos). Sun-soaked hillsides and dry sea breezes give the grape its deep colour and ripe, easy fruit. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo has been a DOC wine since 1968, and it's long been the everyday red that Italians actually drink with dinner.
