Bains Table Mountain Whisky 750Ml
★★★★★ 5.0 (1 review)Pour this and the first thing you'll think is caramel . Bain's is soft, sweet and dangerously smooth, the whisky you hand the friend who swears they don't like whisky and watch them quietly fall for it. It's a single grain, so there's none of that heavy peaty punch. Just vanilla, toffee and a gentle warm kick on the way down. Easy sipping for a slow Nairobi evening, and good enough that the whisky nerds will nod too.
The nose is pure dessert: vanilla, honey, soft toffee, a little banana, with a whisper of oak underneath. Take a sip and it's creamy and rounded, butterscotch and caramel up front, then a warm rush of spice (think cinnamon and nutmeg) that's the maize sweetness saying hello. Because it's a grain whisky the finish is short and clean, so it never sits heavy. Smooth is the headline here, start to finish.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This is South Africa's pride, made at the James Sedgwick Distillery in Wellington, the country's oldest working distillery. The man behind it is Andy Watts, an Englishman who came out for a cricket season in the 1980s, fell for the place and never left, eventually becoming master distiller. He built Bain's from 100% South African yellow maize and matures it twice, both times in first-fill ex-bourbon casks. That double dip in bourbon wood is exactly why it drinks so sweet and creamy. The whisky world noticed: it was crowned World's Best Grain Whisky back in 2013.
