Worth a pour★★★
You know that red that just behaves itself? This is it. Pour a glass and you get a big wave of ripe blackcurrant and dark plum, then it settles into something smooth and grown-up with a long, soft finish. It's a French Cabernet Sauvignon with the volume turned up by southern sun, so it's bold without being a workout. Friday night, a plate of nyama choma, zero overthinking. Tell us the hour and we'll get it to your door.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

Stick your nose in and it's all blackcurrant and dark plum, with a little peppery, herby lift behind the fruit. First sip is full and rounded: think cassis, blackberry, a whisper of cedar and vanilla from a touch of oak. The tannins (that gentle grip that dries your cheeks a bit) are ripe and well-behaved, so it feels velvety rather than chewy. Then a long, smooth finish that makes you want the next sip. Dry, generous, easy to love.

Where it's from

This comes from Pays d'Oc in the Languedoc, the warm, sun-soaked sweep of southern France near the Mediterranean. The name on the bottle is one of wine's great families: Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the house behind the legendary Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux. The clever part of the story is that they took that Bordeaux know-how south, where Cabernet Sauvignon ripens fuller and rounder, and made a proper French Cab you can actually afford on a Tuesday. Pedigree, minus the price tag.

Good to know

What is the price of Baron Philippe de Rothschild Cab Sav 750ml?

Baron Philippe de Rothschild Cab Sav 750ml is KSh 1,999 at Oaks & Corks. Order online for delivery in 30 minutes for most areas in Nairobi, or next day countrywide.

What does Baron Philippe de Rothschild Cabernet Sauvignon 750ml taste like?

It's a dry, full-bodied red led by ripe blackcurrant and dark berries, with hints of cedar, vanilla and a peppery, herby edge. The tannins are ripe and smooth and the finish is long. Bold but easy to drink.

What is the ABV of this wine?

It's 13% alcohol, a classic strength for a red Cabernet Sauvignon.

How should I serve it?

Slightly below room temperature, around 16 to 18°C. Give it 20 minutes in the fridge first, pour into a big-bowled glass, and let it breathe for half an hour to open up the spice and cedar.

What food pairs with it?

Anything grilled and meaty. Nyama choma, beef burgers, steak, lamb, beef stew or pilau all work, and it loves aged hard cheese too.

Where is it from?

Southern France, from the Pays d'Oc region in the Languedoc, made by the famous Baron Philippe de Rothschild house behind Bordeaux's Château Mouton Rothschild.

Is it sweet or dry?

It's a dry red. There's lots of ripe dark-fruit flavour, which can read as a touch of sweetness, but there's no actual sugar to speak of.
