Pour this and the glass goes deep ruby, then comes the smell of dark berries and a little something warm underneath. It's a proper Cabernet: dry, full, blackcurrant and plum with a smooth finish that hangs around. Crack it open next to a fire-licked plate of nyama choma and you'll get why it's named for royalty. Tonight feels like a good night for it.
First sniff is all dark fruit. Blackcurrant, ripe plum, a hint of cherry, with a whisper of oak, spice and vanilla sitting behind it from eight months in French oak barrels. On the palate it's full and dry (no sweetness here), with blackberry and cassis up front and soft, well-knit tannins that give it grip without drying your mouth out. The finish is long and smooth, which is exactly what you want when you're settling in for the evening.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Bayede means 'Hail the King' in Zulu, and this is the genuine article: the only wine brand owned by the Zulu nation. It started in 2008 when King Goodwill Zwelithini teamed up with co-founder Antoinette Vermooten to create jobs back home, and every bottle carries the official Zulu Royal Warrant. The fruit comes from South Africa's Western Cape, heartland of the country's reds. Nice touch: the beadwork on the Prince range is made by women in the community keeping the Zulu beading tradition alive.
