Pour this and you get a glass full of ripe blackberry and cherry, a soft brush of vanilla, and tannins so smooth it practically drinks itself. It's the bottle you want when there's nyama choma on the grill or you just want to sink into the couch after a long one. Plush, generous, easy to love. And there's a nice flex on the label too: Bayede is the only wine on the continent that carries a real Zulu Royal seal. Fancy heritage, friendly price.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

First sniff is a basket of dark fruit, think blackberry and ripe cherry, with a little vanilla and warm spice drifting up from the oak. On the palate it's round and mouth-filling, the fruit stays juicy, and the tannins (the grippy, drying bit) are gentle here, so it glides rather than scratches. Just enough acidity to keep it lively, and a long, warm finish that nudges you toward the next sip. Dry, not sweet, with that 14% giving it a cosy bit of heft.

Where it's from

Bayede comes from South Africa and is properly unique: it's the only brand on the continent to carry the official seal and signature of the Zulu Royal Household, born from a partnership with the late King Goodwill Zwelithini. The name itself is the royal salute, roughly "Hail the King." The cool human detail is the beadwork you'll often find around the bottle neck, hand-strung by women in local beading groups, with a slice of every sale going back to them. Royal wine with a real social heart.

What does Bayede The Prince Merlot 75cl taste like?

Ripe blackberry and cherry up front, with vanilla and a touch of warm spice from the oak. It's smooth and round with soft tannins, balanced acidity and a long finish. Dry, not sweet.

What is the ABV of Bayede The Prince Merlot?

It's 14% alcohol by volume, so a touch fuller and warmer than your average everyday red.

Cool room temperature, about 16 to 18C, in a big red wine glass. Give it a swirl and a few minutes of air to let the fruit open up. No ice.

Anything hearty and savoury. Nyama choma, beef or oxtail stew, grilled lamb, tomato-based pasta, or a wedge of mature cheddar all work beautifully.

Where is it from and who makes it?

It's a South African red from Bayede, the only wine brand on the African continent endorsed with the official seal of the Zulu Royal Household.
