Picture the easiest red in the room. Soft, ripe, juicy, zero rough edges. This is the bottle you open on a Tuesday when you want something that just feels good, or the one you hand a friend who says "I don't really like red wine" and watch them change their mind. Dark berries, a little chocolate, a smooth velvety finish. Pour it next to a plate of nyama choma off the grill and you're sorted.
Nose first: ripe raspberries and dark plum, with a quiet swirl of vanilla and cocoa from its time on oak. On the palate it's plush and rounded, more about soft fruit than grippy structure. It's technically dry (just 3.8 g/l sugar) but the fruit is so ripe it reads as gently sweet, which is exactly why it goes down so easy. The tannins are gentle, the finish is smooth and warming. No harsh bite, nothing to figure out. Just a friendly mouthful of berries and chocolate.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This is the work of Bruce Jack, one of South Africa's most restless winemakers, the guy behind the cult Flagstone winery before he put his own name on the label. The Merlot comes from his Lifestyle range, made from 100% Merlot grapes grown mainly in the Breedekloof Valley in the Western Cape, a warm inland pocket with old, character-filled soils. Grapes are picked in the cool of early morning, then fermented on the skins with regular pump-overs to pull out all that deep ruby colour and ripe fruit. The whole house leans hard into sustainable, low-fuss farming.
