Picture a glass of deep, inky purple that smells like crushed black cherries and violets before you've even tasted it. Catena Malbec is plush and rounded, with just enough grip to keep things grown-up. This is the bottle you grab when there's nyama choma on the grill or a late one with people you actually like. It overdelivers for what it is, which is exactly why it's the Malbec everyone keeps coming back to.
Big, ripe and welcoming. The nose is all black cherry, plum and blackberry with a pretty lift of violet florals. Take a sip and it's smooth and concentrated, those dark fruits rolling through with a touch of mocha and vanilla from its time in French oak. The tannins (that gentle drying grip on your gums) are fine and firm, never harsh, and there's a bright streak of acidity keeping it lively. The finish lingers long after the swallow.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from Bodega Catena Zapata in Mendoza, Argentina, the family that basically proved Malbec could be world-class by planting vines absurdly high up in the Andes foothills. We're talking vineyards from around 920 up to 1,450 metres, where cold nights and intense mountain sun give the fruit its colour, perfume and freshness. It's made by fourth-generation Laura Catena alongside star winemaker Alejandro Vigil, blended from several estate plots. The grapes go through a slow, cold soak before fermenting, then rest in French oak. Serious pedigree, friendly price.
