Cederberg Merlot Shiraz 2021 750ml
Pour this and you get the best of two grapes in one glass. The Merlot brings the plush, ripe-plum smoothness; the Shiraz drops in a little black pepper and spice to keep things interesting. It's deep ruby, soft, and dangerously easy to keep sipping. Grab it for a slow evening, a plate off the grill, or that moment you want a red that hugs you back without making you think too hard.
First sniff is shy, then it opens into a basket of dark fruit. Ripe plum, black cherry and blackcurrant up front, with raspberry and bramble around the edges. The Shiraz throws in a twist of pepper and warm spice, and there's a quiet hint of chocolate underneath from time in oak. The tannins (that grippy, mouth-drying bit) are soft and juicy here, so it goes down silky rather than chewy. Full-bodied but friendly, with that ripe-fruit sweetness carrying through to a long finish.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Cederberg grow their grapes about a kilometre up, in the rugged Cederberg mountains north of Cape Town. It's the highest winery in South Africa and one of the coolest, most remote wine regions in the country, ringed by wilderness. The Nieuwoudt family has farmed this land for generations; they planted their first vines in 1973, and David Nieuwoudt has been making the wine since 1997. High, cool nights and clean mountain air slow the grapes down and lock in that fresh, concentrated fruit you taste.
