-18%This is the bottle you open when the night deserves it. A proper Châteauneuf-du-Pape: deep, warming, full of ripe cherry and dark fruit with a peppery, herby kick that keeps you going back to the glass. It's Grenache-led from France's Southern Rhône, 15% and built to stand up to a serious plate of meat. Pour it for the nyama choma, the slow Sunday lunch, or the dinner you actually want to impress someone at.
Stick your nose in and you get ripe red fruit straight away: cherry, cassis, a little raspberry. Underneath that is garrigue, the wild Mediterranean scrubland herbs the locals talk about, plus a twist of black pepper. On the palate it's full and warming, dark fruit and spice rolling over tannins that are firm but smooth, not grippy. The finish hangs around for ages. Dry, generous, the kind of red that feels like a hug.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Here's the cool bit: Cellier des Princes is the only cooperative producer in all of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. They started back in 1925 when a group of Southern Rhône growers banded together, and they were actually in the room when Châteauneuf became France's very first protected wine appellation. Today around 150 grower families farm the vines together. This red is roughly 90% Grenache with a splash of Syrah and Mourvèdre, aged 10 to 12 months in concrete tanks, no oak, so what you taste is pure sun-soaked fruit and terroir.
