This is the bottle you pull out when the night actually matters. Beaucastel is one of the most revered names in the whole of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and one sip tells you why: it's deep, brooding and savoury, all dark fruit wrapped in wild herbs, leather and spice. Give it air, pour it alongside something off the grill, and let it unfold over a slow evening. It rewards patience, not gulping. And yes, we'll get it to your door fast, any hour.
Full-bodied and properly complex. You get ripe black and red fruit up front, then it turns earthy and savoury: dried herbs (think the scrubby wild thyme and rosemary the French call garrigue), leather, black pepper, a meaty, almost smoky edge and a lick of spice. The tannins are firm but fine, giving it real grip and structure, and it finishes long and dry. This isn't a fruit-bomb. It's layered, grown-up wine that keeps talking the longer it sits in the glass.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Beaucastel sits at the northern edge of Châteauneuf-du-Pape in France's Southern Rhône, run by the Perrin family across five generations. Their patch is famous for galets roulés, the big rolled pebbles that soak up the sun by day and warm the vines at night, all swept clean by the Mistral wind. Two things make this estate stand out: they champion Mourvèdre far more than most neighbours (they brought cuttings up from Bandol), and they farm organically and biodynamically, which they've done for decades. The blend is built from the old-school Rhône grapes, then aged in big oak foudres for about a year before bottling.

- What does Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 75cl taste like?
Full-bodied and savoury. Ripe black and red fruit leading into garrigue herbs, leather, pepper, spice and an earthy, meaty depth, with firm fine tannins and a long dry finish.
- What is the ABV?
It's 14% ABV, in a 750ml bottle.
- How do I serve it?
Cool room temperature, 16-18°C, in big red wine glasses. Decant a young one for an hour or two first; it really opens up with air.
- What grapes is it made from?
A classic Southern Rhône blend led by Mourvèdre and Grenache with Syrah and a supporting cast of traditional Châteauneuf varieties. Beaucastel is known for leaning harder on Mourvèdre than most.
- What pairs with it?
Anything rich off the grill or slow-cooked. Nyama choma, lamb, beef stew, roast duck, aged cheeses. It loves food with weight to match its own.
- Can I age it?
Absolutely. It drinks well young with a decant, but it's built to cellar and will keep evolving beautifully for many years.
