You know that bottle that makes a slow Friday feel like an occasion? This is it. It's deep, savoury and properly grown-up: dark fruit, a hint of pepper and herbs, tannins like velvet. The clever bit is whose hands it's from. The Perrin family make Château de Beaucastel, one of the legendary names of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and this comes from their vines just across the road. Same family, same magic, a fraction of the fuss. Pour it next to a charcoal grill and watch dinner level up.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

Deep ruby in the glass, and the nose pulls you in: ripe red and black fruit, then that wild Provençal scrub the French call garrigue. Think dried herbs, a twist of black pepper, a whisper of leather. On the palate it's full-bodied and generous, black-cherry richness with a savoury, earthy backbone that keeps it serious rather than sweet. The tannins are fine and silky, not grippy, and it finishes long and warming. It's bone dry, by the way, the fruit just does a good impression of sweetness.

Where it's from

Coudoulet is the Perrin family's vineyard in the southern Rhône, and it sits right across the A7 motorway from their famous Château de Beaucastel estate. That tarmac is basically the only thing separating these vines from grand Châteauneuf-du-Pape land, which is why people nickname it 'baby Beaucastel'. Same rolled-pebble soils, the galets roulés that soak up the day's heat and feed it back to the vines overnight. It's a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault, aged a few months in big old oak casks called foudres so it gains depth without tasting of fresh wood.

What does Château de Beaucastel 'Coudoulet de Beaucastel' Côtes du Rhône Rouge 75cl taste like?

Full-bodied and savoury. Ripe red and black fruit, garrigue herbs, black pepper and a touch of leather, with fine silky tannins and a long, warming finish. It's dry, not sweet.

What is the ABV?

It's 14.5% ABV, so a fairly powerful, full red. Pace yourself.

Around 16°C in a big glass. Decant it for half an hour to an hour, or open it while you cook. A short chill helps if your room is warm.

Grilled and roasted meat is the home run, especially nyama choma, lamb or a slow beef stew. Aged cheeses work too.

Where is it from and who makes it?

It's from the southern Rhône in France, made by the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel. The vineyard sits just across the motorway from their Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate, hence the 'baby Beaucastel' tag.

What grapes is it made from?

A southern Rhône blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah, usually with a little Cinsault, grown on the famous rolled-pebble soils.

Can I age it?

Yes. It's lovely now but has the structure to improve for several years if you'd rather stash a bottle.
