This is the bottle you open when dinner involves meat and a bit of fire. Three grapes, one big-hearted dry red: dark cherry and plum up front, a little pepper and spice behind it, all wrapped in soft, velvety tannins that don't grip your cheeks. It's full and warming at 14%, the kind of glass that makes a Friday nyama choma feel like an occasion. Want it tonight? We'll have it at your door, late hour or not.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

Stick your nose in and you get ripe black cherry and plum first, then a flicker of spice. Think star anise and a twist of green peppercorn, with the Malbec throwing in a darker blackberry note and a herby hint of rosemary. On the palate it's full and round, fruit-forward but properly dry, so no sweetness. A light kiss of oak adds a gentle toasty edge, and the tannins are smooth rather than chewy, carrying you to a long, satisfying finish.

Where it's from

Cilmor comes out of the Worcester valley in South Africa's Western Cape, with the winery sitting at the foot of the Dewetsberg mountain. The name itself is a sweet bit of family history: it's stitched together from the founder's two kids, Cilna and Morne. They're a Fairtrade-certified outfit, so the grapes behind this blend are grown under fair and ethical terms, which is a nice thing to know while you're enjoying the glass.
