Deetlefs Stonecross Pinotage Rose 75cl
★★★★½ 4.5 (2 reviews)Picture strawberry sorbet, but it's dry and it's wine. That's the whole pitch. Stonecross Pinotage Rosé is pale, pretty and fruity on the nose, then totally dry on the tongue, so it hits all those berry notes without any sugary aftertaste. Get it properly cold and it's your move for a hot Nairobi afternoon, a chilled balcony catch-up, or just because the day asked for something pink. We'll have it at your door fast, whenever the craving lands.
First thing you get is the smell: crushed strawberries, sweet cherry, a slice of ripe nectarine, and a funny little candy-floss sweetness that makes you grin. Then you sip and it pulls a switch. The fruit is all there, that strawberry-sorbet rush right at the front, but it finishes bone dry with a fresh, almost salty tang that makes you want the next sip immediately. Light on its feet, zippy, never heavy. Easy to love, harder to put down.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from Deetlefs Wine Estate, tucked into the Breedekloof valley near Rawsonville in South Africa's Western Cape. Here's the cool bit: the place was founded back in 1822 and it's still run by the same family, seven generations deep, which makes it one of the oldest continuously family-owned estates in the country. For the rosé, they hand-pick Pinotage grapes from two specific blocks, press them gently and give the juice barely any time on the skins, which is exactly why the colour stays so pale and the style so fresh. A couple of months resting on the fine lees rounds it out before bottling.
