Drostdy Hof Claret Sweet Ltrs
★★★★ 4.0 (1 review)Pour this when you want red wine to be easy and a little sweet, no homework required. It's soft, fruity and gently sugary, the kind of glass that goes down smooth while the nyama choma's still on the grill. Best part? It lives in a 3L box, so it keeps pouring long after a bottle would've tapped out. Crack it, chill it a touch, and let it do the rounds.
Deep ruby in the glass, and the nose is all ripe summer fruit: strawberry, mulberry and sweet cherry, like jam still warm in the pot. The sip follows through soft and rounded, with that natural grape sweetness sitting up front and almost no grip or dryness to fight you. Tannins are low, so nothing bites. It's juicy, friendly and uncomplicated, a red for people who think they don't like red.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Drostdy-Hof is a South African label out of Tulbagh in the Western Cape, made under the Distell stable. The name comes from De Oude Drostdy, a grand old 1804 magistrate's house in town that Distell still owns and runs as a museum and tasting venue. The wine itself uses a classic Cape trio of grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage and Tinta Barocca, and the sweetness isn't added later. They simply stop the fermentation early so the grape's own natural sugar stays in the glass.

- What does Drostdy-Hof Sweet Claret 3L taste like?
Soft, juicy and gently sweet. Think ripe strawberry, mulberry and sweet cherry, low tannin and easy to sip. It's a friendly red, not a serious dry one.
- What is the ABV of Drostdy-Hof Sweet Claret?
It's 12.5% alcohol, right in the usual range for an everyday red.

Lightly chilled. Pop it in the fridge for about 20 minutes, then pour. Around 10 to 14C is the sweet spot, and a stray ice cube on a hot night is totally fine.

Yes, properly sweet. The winemakers stop fermentation early so the natural grape sugar stays in, which is what gives it that soft, sugary lean instead of a dry finish.

A South African blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage and Tinta Barocca. Pinotage is the Cape's own grape, so this is a real taste of South Africa.
- How much wine is in the box?
Three litres, which is the equivalent of four standard bottles. The bag-in-box keeps it fresh for weeks after you open it, so there's no rush to finish.
- Where is it from?
Tulbagh in South Africa's Western Cape, made under the Distell group. The brand is named after the historic 1804 De Oude Drostdy building in town.
