Fernet-Branca 75cl-23%
Exceptional★★★★★
Pour a chilled shot and the whole room knows you mean business. Fernet-Branca is jet-black, intensely bitter and shockingly minty, like a herb garden mugged a peppermint. It's the drink bartenders share at the end of a shift and the cure-all you reach for after a heavy nyama choma night. Not sweet, not subtle, not for everyone. If you get it, you really get it.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

First hit is a wall of menthol and eucalyptus, cool and bracing, like a candy cane with a sharp edge. Underneath that is a tangle of bitter herbs: chamomile, saffron, a whiff of myrrh, plus earthy rhubarb and gentian root that dry your mouth right out. There's a faint dark-chocolate-and-liquorice depth before the long cooling finish that leaves your whole mouth tingling minty. Barely sweet. Properly, gloriously bitter. It wakes you up.

Where it's from

Born in Milan in 1845, dreamed up by a self-taught herbalist named Bernardino Branca who first sold it as a tonic for everything from fever to dodgy stomachs. The family firm, Fratelli Branca, still makes it from the same secret recipe: 27 herbs, roots and spices sourced from all over the world, infused into a grape spirit and then rested in oak for at least a year to smooth the rough edges. Same bottle, same mystery, nearly two centuries on.
