Gabrielskloof The Blend 2018
Pour this and the room slows down a notch. It's a South African Bordeaux-style red that hits with deep blackcurrant and dark cherry, then settles into something earthy and grown-up with tannins that grip just enough to keep you interested. This is your bottle for the night you're firing up nyama choma, or the one where dinner runs long and nobody's in a hurry to leave. Generous, complex, properly satisfying. Tell us the hour, we'll get it to your door.
Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

First sniff is dark fruit, plum and cassis with a leafy, almost pencil-shavings edge that says these are real Bordeaux grapes. On the palate it's plush and full: blackcurrant up front, dark cherry behind it, then a savoury earthy streak and a whisper of cedar and dark chocolate from the oak. The tannins are firm but fine, the kind that frame the fruit instead of drying you out. It finishes long and dry with a touch of liquorice. Nothing sweet about it, just layered and confident.

Where it's from

Gabrielskloof sits near Bot River in the Overberg, a slightly warmer pocket of the Cape that suits Bordeaux grapes nicely. The estate started life as a canola farm before vines went in, and these days the cellar is run by Peter-Allan Finlayson, son of South African wine legend Peter Finlayson and the man behind the cult Crystallum label. He works the place with a light touch and a serious eye for elegance, and the farm is a WWF Conservation Champion, so there's real care for the land in every bottle.
