Itinera Primitivo Salento 75cl
Pour this and you get a wall of ripe blackberry and plum, soft as anything, with a warm spicy hum underneath. It's the red you grab when you want something generous and easy on the palate without thinking too hard. Nyama choma night, a slow Friday, a film and no plans. It just works. Fun fact for later: Primitivo is genetically the same grape California calls Zinfandel, so if you love a big jammy Zin, you already love this.
Deep ruby, almost purple in the glass. The nose is all ripe dark fruit, blackberry, plum and black cherry, with a little vanilla and a curl of cocoa and warm spice behind it. On the palate it's full and rounded, smooth and a touch jammy, with soft tannins that don't grip or dry you out. It reads dry but the fruit is so ripe it feels almost sweet. Finishes warm and easy.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from Salento, the sun-baked heel of Italy down in Puglia. Primitivo loves that heat, it ripens early and piles on sugar and dark fruit, which is exactly why this wine tastes so plush. The Itinera name comes from the Latin for journey, and the line is meant as a little tour through Italy's regions. It's made by Mondo del Vino, part of the big Argea group, who know their way around southern Italian reds.
