You know regular Jameson. This is the version that's been to the gym. Black Barrel pours out thick with butterscotch, fudge and warm toffee, all riding on that classic Jameson smoothness. Pour it after a long week, after nyama choma, after the kids are finally down. It's the kind of glass that makes you slow down and go oh, that's nice . And since we deliver fast at pretty much any hour, tonight is very much on the table.
First sniff and you get sweet, almost dessert-like vibes: butterscotch, creamy fudge, vanilla. Take a sip and it goes fuller and fruitier than you'd expect, with soft tropical fruit, a little coconut, nutty toasted notes and a gentle warm spice running through. The double-charred barrels are doing the heavy lifting here, pulling extra sugars and toasted-wood depth out of the oak. The finish is long, sweet and a touch peppery, with that toasted-vanilla glow that hangs around.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This is Jameson, so it's made in Ireland at the Midleton distillery down in County Cork. Black Barrel is basically a love letter to the coopers, the barrel craftsmen, who take already-used bourbon casks and give them a second, deeper charring until the inside is properly blackened. That extra char is what unlocks the butterscotch-and-fudge richness. It first landed back in 2011 under the name Select Reserve, and it carries a higher dose of rich pot still whiskey than the standard green-label Jameson, which is why it drinks so much bolder.
