Pour this when you want bourbon that's already done the hard work for you. Jim Beam Black is the regular Beam left in the barrel for extra years, and you taste every one of them. Deep amber, soft as you like, all caramel and warm oak with a finish that hangs around. Crack it open after the nyama choma's cleared, drop in some ice, and let the night slow down.
First whiff is warm and sweet: think honey, toffee and a little toasted nut, like peanut brittle. Take a sip and it rolls over your tongue full and round, not thin or sharp. Caramel and vanilla up front, dried-fruit richness in the middle, then toasted oak and a gentle baking-spice warmth on the way out. The finish is long and cosy rather than fiery, the kind that makes you want one more sip. Smooth, grown-up, very easy to like.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Straight out of Clermont, Kentucky, from the Beam family, who've been making whiskey for seven generations. The recipe is corn-led with a hit of rye and malted barley, then aged in brand-new American oak barrels charred so hard the inside looks like alligator skin. That deep char is what caramelises the wood sugars and pours all the toffee-and-vanilla character into the spirit. Black is simply Beam given extra years in those barrels, which is exactly why it drinks so smooth.
