Pour this when dinner's done and you want pudding in a glass. Kagor Lux is a deep, sweet, velvety red that drinks like dark cherries dipped in chocolate, the kind of thing you sip slow on the couch, not chug. It's that classic old-school "Kagor" style from Moldova, made sweet on purpose, so think of it as the bottle you reach for instead of dessert. Cold night, good company, one square of dark chocolate. Sorted.
First sniff and you get ripe dark fruit. Blackcurrant, plum, a little stewed cherry, with a dried-fruit thing going on, like figs and raisins. The sip is where it gets indulgent: rich, smooth and properly sweet, with cocoa and a touch of berry jam rolling through. The tannins (that grippy, drying edge red wine usually gives you) are soft here, sanded right down, so it glides instead of bites. It finishes warm and sweet, more dessert than drink.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
It's made by Asconi, a family winery in the village of Puhoi, Moldova, a small country that's been growing grapes for thousands of years. The "Kagor" name is the fun bit: it's a nod to Cahors in France, the dark red the Russian Orthodox church adopted centuries ago for communion. Moldova ran with the style and made it its own sweet, heat-coaxed dessert wine. Asconi builds theirs from Cabernet Sauvignon, the grape behind a lot of the world's big serious reds, here turned soft, dark and sweet.
