Pour this when you want something pink that actually means business. It's bone-dry, not sweet, so all you get is a rush of cold strawberries and raspberries with nothing cloying behind it. Chill it hard and it's the easiest yes of the evening, whether that's a balcony sundowner or a long table of nyama choma. One bottle rarely makes it to the end of the night, so maybe grab two.
Stick your nose in and it's like a punnet of fresh berries with a little rose petal floating over the top. Strawberry, raspberry, red cherry, all bright and just-picked. On the tongue it's crisp and properly dry, with juicy red fruit, a hint of melon and red apple, and a clean snappy finish that leaves you reaching for the glass again. No sugar, no fuss, just fresh fruit and zip.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Kanonkop is one of South Africa's most respected estates, sitting on the Simonsberg slopes in Stellenbosch and family-run since the early 1900s. They're basically the godfathers of Pinotage, the grape South Africa invented by crossing Pinot Noir with Cinsault. The Kadette range is their more relaxed, everyday line. For this rosé they crush the Pinotage and press it straight away so barely any colour bleeds in, then cold-ferment the juice at 13°C until bone-dry. Serious pedigree, easy-going bottle.
