-10%Pour this cold and the first thing you get is a proper zing. Gooseberry, a squeeze of lime, that fresh garden-just-after-rain thing good Sauvignon Blanc does. It is bright and clean without screaming at you, which is the whole point here. Friday balcony, late catch-up, anything off the grill. Say the word and it is at your door, ice-cold.
Stick your nose in and it is gooseberry, green apple and a lift of citrus, with a little melon and passionfruit hiding underneath. First sip is fresh and juicy, the acidity gives it real snap, and there is a faint flinty, stony edge that keeps it grown-up rather than sweet. It is dry, so no sugar, just fruit and zip. Finishes clean and makes you want the next sip. Less of the aggressive grassy punch some Sauvignons throw at you, more nuance.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Kumusha is the project of Tinashe Nyamudoka, a Zimbabwe-born sommelier who rose through the ranks at one of Cape Town's top restaurants and went on to launch his own label in 2017. He was also part of the Zimbabwean blind-tasting team featured in the documentary Blind Ambition, so the man knows a glass when he smells one. Kumusha means home, or roots, in Shona, which is the whole idea: South African grapes, an African name, his story in the bottle. This Sauvignon Blanc is grown in the Western Cape, where cool coastal air keeps the fruit fresh and gives it that mineral edge.
