It pours a bright amber, almost golden. The first thing you get is sweet and inviting: ripe apple and pear, golden raisin, a curl of toasted oak. Take a sip and it's full and rounded across the tongue, with vanilla and caramel up front and a gentle nudge of nutmeg and baking spice behind it. The finish is mellow, lightly warming, never harsh, with a last whisper of stone fruit and oak. Easygoing but with real depth if you slow down and pay attention.

Where it's from
This comes from KWV in Worcester, in South Africa's Western Cape, home to what is reckoned to be the largest copper potstill distillery in the world, well over a hundred stills under one roof. KWV bottled its first commercial brandy back in the 1920s and shipped it to the UK, and it has been quietly racking up brandy awards ever since. "Potstill" means it's double-distilled in copper, the same patient way Cognac is made. It just can't call itself Cognac because the grapes are Cape grapes, not French ones. Five years in oak does the rest.
