La Motte Syrah 75cl
★★★★★ 5.0 (1 review)Picture nyama choma off the grill and a glass of something dark and a little wild to wash it down. That's this. La Motte Syrah pours deep and inky, then hits you with blackberry, plum and a real kick of black pepper. It's full-bodied and properly grown-up, the kind of red you open when the night's just getting good. Tell us where you are and we'll have it there fast.
First sniff and you get dark fruit straight away: ripe blackberry and juicy plum, with black pepper, a twist of liquorice and a little clove sitting behind it. On the palate it's rich and mouth-filling, that dark fruit rolling into warm spice and a whisper of vanilla oak from its time in French barrels. The tannins (the grippy bit that makes your mouth feel dry) are firm but smooth, so it holds together without scratching. Long, peppery, savoury finish. Built to stand up to food.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
La Motte sits in Franschhoek, the gorgeous valley the French Huguenots settled back in the 1600s. The estate's history stretches to 1709, and these days it's run by the Rupert family, who turned it into one of the Cape's most loved wine farms. Syrah is their signature, and the fruit here picks up a natural black-pepper spice from the cooler vineyard blocks. That's the pepper you taste. Real terroir, not a marketing line.
