Pour this cold and the first sip basically resets your evening. It's a dry Kenyan white that tastes like a bite of green apple with a squeeze of lime, light on its feet and properly thirst-quenching. Grab it for a Friday on the balcony, a plate of grilled tilapia, or that moment you just want a glass that doesn't take itself too seriously. And here's the flex: the grapes were grown right here, up in Naivasha. Kenyan wine that actually holds its own.
Crack it open chilled and you get green apple and fresh citrus up front, lemon and a little grapefruit, with a quiet hint of tropical fruit hanging behind it like pineapple or melon. On the tongue it's dry, meaning no sugar sweetness, just bright fruit and a zingy acidity that makes your mouth water. The body is light and clean, and the finish snaps off dry and fresh so you're reaching for the next sip before you've thought about it.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Leleshwa comes from Morendat Farm in Naivasha, up in the Great Rift Valley at roughly 1,800 to 2,000 metres. The story is genuinely cheeky: about twenty years back, experts said grapes simply wouldn't grow in Kenya, so the team behind it (backed by Kenya Nut Company) planted vines anyway to prove them wrong. Sitting right on the equator, the vines get around twelve hours of sun a day with cool nights, which lets the fruit ripen slowly and hold onto that fresh acidity. The result is one of very few wines actually grown and made in Kenya.
