Love Stormhoek Shiraz 75cl
Big, dark and a little smoky, this is the red you grab when dinner involves fire and meat. Stormhoek's Shiraz pours deep ruby and tastes like ripe blackberry and plum with a twist of black pepper, all wrapped in soft oak. It's dry and full-bodied without being heavy or fussy. Pour it for nyama choma, a slow-cooked stew, or just a long night in good company.
First sniff is all ripe dark fruit: blackberry, black plum, a little cassis. Then the Shiraz personality kicks in with cracked black pepper and a whiff of spice, plus a gentle smoky note from the oak it rests on. On the palate it's smooth and full, with juicy fruit up front and soft, velvety tannins (that slightly grippy, mouth-drying feel) that keep it from being sweet. The touch of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend adds a bit of backbone and a darker, savoury edge. Dry finish, warm and a little spicy.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Stormhoek comes out of Wellington in South Africa's Western Cape, one of the oldest corners of the Cape wine country. The brand was the work of Graham Knox, who flipped the usual playbook: instead of making wine then hunting for buyers, Stormhoek only made wine once it had someone to drink it. They bought into a little Wellington vineyard called Siyabonga for a home base but sourced the everyday wines from hand-picked growers' blocks nearby. Back in the mid-2000s Stormhoek became a bit of a legend for being one of the first wineries to win fans through wine blogs, long before that was a thing.
