MAN Chardonnay 75cl
Pour this and you get the best of both worlds. Bright citrus and juicy stone fruit up front, then a soft creamy roundness underneath, like someone stirred a little custard into your lemon. It's a Chardonnay for people who think they don't like Chardonnay: no big buttery oak bomb, just fresh fruit with a gentle vanilla glow. Crack it cold on a Friday, line up some grilled prawns or roast chicken, and you're sorted.
First sniff is all sunshine: marmalade, pineapple, a curl of lime zest. Take a sip and the fruit carries through as citrus, peach and a little ripe melon, sitting on a smooth, slightly creamy texture from time spent on the lees (the spent yeast, which adds that oatmeal-custard body). Only about a fifth saw oak, so the vanilla is a whisper, not a plank. Acidity keeps it lively and the finish comes clean, leaving you reaching for the next sip.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
MAN Family Wines comes out of the Coastal Region of South Africa's Western Cape, started back in 2001 by three mates: winemaker brothers Tyrrel and Philip Myburgh and their pal Jose Conde. The name MAN is a cheeky tribute to their wives, Marie, Anette and Nicky. The grapes for this one grow in Agter-Paarl on dry, shaley Malmesbury soils with no irrigation, which keeps yields low and flavours concentrated. 'Padstal', the name on the bottle, is Afrikaans for the roadside farm stall where you'd grab something good on the drive home.

- What does MAN Family Wines Chardonnay 75cl taste like?
