Marengo comes out of Ukraine, made by Bayadera Group, one of Eastern Europe's biggest drinks houses. The sparkling wines are produced at the Koblevo winery down in the sunny south near the Black Sea, a serious operation that turns out tens of millions of bottles a year. That floral, fruity character isn't an accident: it leans on Muscat grapes, the variety winemakers reach for when they want a wine that smells like a fruit bowl. Bayadera only started making its own sparkling wines in 2015, so this is a young, modern take rather than an old-world relic.
