Want a white with a bit of swagger? This is the one. Picture ripe pear and apricot, then a creamy, lightly toasty edge from a stint in oak, all landing on a clean dry finish that keeps you coming back for the next sip. It's a proper food wine but happy on its own with the music up. We'll get it to your door cold and fast, whatever hour you're asking.
Stick your nose in and you get ripe pear, yellow stone fruit and a whiff of honeysuckle, with a gentle waft of vanilla and toasted hazelnut from the oak sitting behind it. The sip is where it shows off: medium-bodied and a touch creamy, with juicy pear and baked apple, a lick of lemon curd, a quiet cinnamon spice, then a fresh line of acidity that wipes the slate clean. Bone dry (just 2 g/l sugar), so the fruit reads ripe but never sweet. That mineral, almost flinty lift on the finish is the Stellenbosch granite talking.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Mulderbosch is a Stellenbosch name people in the know respect, and Steen op Hout is its signature. "Steen" is the old South African nickname for Chenin Blanc, brought over by the Dutch back in the 17th century, and "op hout" just means "on wood." So the name literally says Chenin on oak. The fruit comes off granite soils within a short drive of the cool Atlantic at False Bay, off vines ranging from young to around 35 years old. A chunk of the wine ferments and rests in big neutral French oak barrels and foudres, which is what gives it that creamy texture without going full butter-bomb. The first vintage landed in 1996 and helped drag Chenin out of the cheap-and-cheerful corner into something worth taking seriously.
