Pour it and you get a ruby glass with a nose of strawberry that's almost jammy, a little smoky around the edges. Namaqua comes out of the Olifants River country near Vredendal, on the edge of South Africa's wild Northern Cape. The cellar's been making wine here since 1947, and today Namaqua pumps out roughly a tenth of all the wine South Africa makes in a year. The vineyards catch a cool breeze off the nearby Atlantic, which helps the grapes ripen sweet and clean. The "Johannisberger" name is just their old-school label for this soft, sweet, easy style. Big country, unfussy wine.
