Nederburg Baronne 75cl
Pour this and the whole table goes quiet for a second. Nederburg Baronne is South Africa's go-to red for a reason: deep, ripe and smooth, all blackcurrant and dark cherry with a little pepper kick on the end. Full-bodied but never heavy, so it slides right into a night of nyama choma or a slow movie on the couch. When someone asks you to grab a red and you don't want to think too hard, this is the answer. We'll have it at your door fast, any hour.
Stick your nose in first. You get dark berries straight away, blackcurrant and cherry, then plum and a whiff of sweet spice off the gentle oak. The sip is where it wins: rich and plush, ripe blackcurrant and cassis up front, a twist of black pepper and cinnamon behind it. The tannins (that grippy, drying feel) are soft and rounded, so it goes down easy without losing its backbone. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, and you can taste both: the Cab brings the blackcurrant structure, the Shiraz brings the spice and juice.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it comes from
Nederburg is one of South Africa's most famous wineries, sitting in the warm Paarl valley in the Western Cape. Baronne was dreamed up back in 1973 by Nederburg's legendary cellar-master Gunter Brozel, and it's been the country's favourite red blend pretty much ever since. The grapes come off vineyards in Paarl and neighbouring Stellenbosch, and the wine rests in oak for around six months before blending. Decades on, it's still the bottle South Africans trust without a second thought.
