Robertson Winery Ruby Cabernet 75cl. 2020
You want a red that just gets on with it. No homework, no swirling-and-frowning. This is it. Robertson Winery's Ruby Cabernet is plush, fruit-forward and friendly, the kind of glass that makes a random Tuesday feel like a plan. Pour it next to nyama choma, put on something good, and let the night take care of itself.
First sniff and it's all ripe berries: think dark plum, juicy red cherry, a little blackberry jam. On the tongue it's medium-bodied and rounded, that fruit carrying right through with tannins so soft they barely whisper. Nothing grippy or drying, nothing that needs years in a cellar. Just smooth, generous, easy red wine that knows exactly what it's doing.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from Robertson Winery, sat just outside the town of Robertson in South Africa's Breede River Valley. The valley soils are unusually rich in lime and it barely rains there, around 280mm a year, which the vines seem to love. Fun bit: Ruby Cabernet itself is a made grape, bred in California by crossing Cabernet Sauvignon with hardy old Carignan, built for sunshine and easy ripeness. Robertson sources the fruit from a tight circle of grower families in the valley, then keeps the style soft and approachable from day one.
