Rupert & Rothschild Baron Edmond 2018 75cl
This is the bottle you open when you want to feel a little fancy without trying too hard. The flagship red from Rupert & Rothschild, it's deep, dark and smooth, all blackcurrant and cedar with a polished, grown-up finish that lingers. Pour it for a slow nyama choma, a proper steak, or a long catch-up where nobody's checking the time. It drinks beautifully now, and it'll only get prettier if you can keep your hands off it for a few years.
Pour it and you get deep ruby in the glass, then a nose of ripe blackcurrant and dark berries, a curl of violet, and that classy cedar-and-pencil-shaving thing wine people call graphite. First sip is plush, plummy and properly ripe, framed by fine French-oak spice and a savoury, earthy edge that keeps it interesting. The tannins are silky rather than grippy, there's real freshness running through it, and the dry finish just keeps going. Smooth and elegant, never heavy.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Here's the cool bit: this is the wine born from two legendary families shaking hands. Back in 1997 South Africa's Dr Anton Rupert teamed up with France's Baron Edmond de Rothschild, of the Bordeaux wine dynasty, on the historic Fredericksburg farm in the Franschhoek Valley. The idea was simple, South African fruit made with old-school Bordeaux know-how. This bottle is named after the Baron himself, so it's the flagship, the one they put their best blend into. French oak, French blending brain, proudly South African soul.
