Saint Celine 75cl
Pour this when you want a glass that hugs you back. Saint Celine is soft, juicy and gently sweet, all ripe red berries and dark fruit with nothing sharp or stuffy about it. At just 8% it's light on its feet, so you can sip a couple of glasses on a slow Nairobi evening and still feel grand in the morning. Chill it down, kick back, and let it do the easy part.
Deep ruby in the glass, and the nose pulls you straight in: ripe blackcurrant, a smear of raspberry jam, a little warm clove spice in the background. On the tongue it's plush and rounded, sweet but not cloying, with juicy red and dark berry flavour and a soft velvet finish that lingers nicely. There's real sugar here (about 31 g/l), so think dessert-leaning rather than dry. No grippy tannin, no bite. Just smooth, fruity and friendly.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Saint Celine comes from The Saints, a range made by DGB (the Douglas Green crew), one of South Africa's big, long-standing wine houses. The grapes, Cinsault and Ruby Cabernet, are pulled from vineyards across the Western Cape, then blended and bottled at the cellars in Wellington under winemaker Gerhard Carstens. Cinsault is the soft, juicy old workhorse of the Cape, and Ruby Cabernet brings the deep colour and dark-berry depth. Together they make exactly the kind of crowd-pleaser this is.
