Sandeman Ruby Port 1tr
Dessert's done, the plates are cleared, and you want one more good thing. This is it. A small pour of Sandeman Fine Ruby is full, sweet and juicy, like biting into ripe plums with a warm glow at the end. It's the bottle that turns a block of cheese or a square of dark chocolate into an actual occasion. Keep it on the shelf and you're never caught short when a late night wants a sweet finish.
Pour it and you get a bright, youthful ruby-red in the glass. The nose is all fresh red fruit, think plum and strawberry, with a little spice hiding behind it. On the palate it's full-bodied and properly sweet, round and smooth, with juicy berry flavour that carries through to a warm finish (that 19.5% doing its gentle thing). It's rich without being heavy or sticky. A little goes a long way, which is exactly the point.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from the Douro Valley in northern Portugal, the steep terraced river country where port has been made for centuries. The grapes are crushed and fermented with the skins for colour and flavour, then grape spirit is added at just the right moment to halt fermentation and lock in the natural sweetness. That's what fortified means, and it's why port hits harder and sweeter than regular wine. The wine then rests in oak at the Sandeman lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia. The house itself goes back to George Sandeman in 1790, and you'll know it instantly by 'the Don', that caped, wide-hatted silhouette on the label that's one of the most recognised faces in wine.
