Stick your nose in and it's deep, almost inky purple, with ripe plum and blackberry jumping out first. Behind that, a swirl of black cherry, a whisper of vanilla and warm spice from its six months in oak. On the palate it's full and generous, fruit-forward and ripe but bone dry, never sweet. The tannins (that grippy, gum-drying feel) are soft and polished here, so it goes down smooth. Finishes long and fruity with a little spiced warmth.

Séptima is Spanish for "seventh," and there's a reason. It's the seventh winery built by Raventós Codorníu, a Spanish wine family that's been at it since the 1500s. They went hunting for the perfect New World terroir and landed in Agrelo, in Mendoza, right at the foot of the Andes. The vineyards sit roughly 1,050 metres up, where cool mountain nights and bright sun give Malbec that deep colour and ripe, concentrated fruit. Seven is also their lucky number. Fitting, since this bottle rarely lasts the evening.
