Silk & Spice Red Route 75cl
Want a red that just gets on with making your night better? This is it. Deep ruby in the glass, ripe dark fruit on the nose, a little vanilla and warm spice, then soft, rounded tannins that don't fight you. It's smooth without being boring and grown-up without being fussy. Pour it for nyama choma, pour it for pizza on the couch, pour it just because it's a Friday. We'll get it to you fast, any hour.
Stick your nose in and you get ripe red and black fruit first. Think plum and blackberry, then a soft lift of vanilla and white chocolate, with a whisper of mocha behind it. The first sip is rich and full but never heavy. Tannins (the grippy, mouth-drying bit) are soft and rounded here, so it glides. There's a warm spice running through it like cinnamon and clove, a nod to the old spice route, and the finish is long and smooth. It's dry, but the ripe fruit makes it feel generous rather than austere.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
It's made by Sogrape, Portugal's biggest and most respected wine house, the people behind some serious Portuguese names. The grapes are all native: Touriga Nacional, Baga and Alicante Bouschet, pulled from regions like Dão, Bairrada and Lisboa and partly rested in oak for that vanilla-spice warmth. The whole idea is a tip of the hat to the 15th-century Portuguese navigators who opened the spice route in 1498 and brought cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and pepper back to the West. You can taste the wink in the glass.
