Simonsig Cape Fox Chardonnay 2021 750ml
Pour this when you want white wine that actually feels like an occasion. It's creamy and rounded, full of peach and citrus, with that soft buttery warmth good French oak gives a Chardonnay. Dry, but never sharp or thin. Chill it down, get a roast chicken going, and you've basically nailed dinner. Fun fact to drop while you pour: Simonsig planted South Africa's very first Chardonnay back in 1978, so this is the real OG.
First sniff is bright and fruity: white and yellow peach, quince, a lift of citrus blossom. Then the oak slides in with butterscotch and a gentle toasty, nutty thing going on. On the tongue it's where this wine flexes. There's a proper creamy, mouth-coating texture in the middle, fruit and oak holding hands rather than fighting, and it lands on a clean, almost stony finish that keeps it dry and fresh. Smart and generous, not heavy.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
This comes from Simonsig, a family farm in Stellenbosch run by the Malan family, who are basically South African wine royalty. Frans Malan made the country's first bottle-fermented bubbly here in 1971, then in 1978 the estate released South Africa's first Chardonnay. So when you drink this, you're drinking from the people who put the grape on the map in this country. Generations on, his sons and grandkids still run the place.
