Tasting note · by The Oaks Cellar

First sniff and you get white pear and crisp green apple, then a hit of yellow peach and something tropical sneaking in behind it, think passion fruit and pineapple. There's a tiny touch of honey on the nose that makes it smell almost ripe and sunny. On the tongue it's got a gentle whisper of fruit-sweetness, but then bright lemony acidity swings in and tightens the whole thing up. The texture is rounder and creamier than you'd expect, so it coats your mouth before finishing clean and fresh. Soft, juicy, and properly moreish.

Where it's from

This comes from Simonsig, a family estate in Stellenbosch run by the Malan family, now third generation in the cellar. Chenin Blanc was actually the very first wine Frans Malan bottled here back in 1968, so it's basically the house signature. They ferment it cool in stainless steel tanks, around 12 to 14C, which is the trick to keeping all that bright, fresh fruit intact. South Africa does Chenin better than just about anyone, and this is a textbook example of why.
