-20%Pour this and watch the room go quiet. It comes out of the bottle a deep, natural blue. Then you splash in tonic and it turns soft pink right in front of you, no trick, just chemistry doing a party piece. Underneath the magic show it's a proper dry gin: bright juniper, a hit of citrus, flowers and fresh-cut grass. The drink you bring out when you want people to actually look at what's in their glass.
First sniff is classic gin, that piney juniper hit, with naartjie (South African mandarin) and coriander giving it a citrus lift. Then the gentler stuff shows up: rose pelargonium for a soft floral, rosy note and the blue pea flower bringing a green, earthy cut-grass thing that keeps it from ever being sweet or perfumey. It's smooth and aromatic, dry on the finish, and that floral edge is what makes it sing in a G&T rather than disappear.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Six Dogs is a craft distillery tucked in the little valley of De Wet near Robertson, in South Africa's Western Cape, out on the fringe of the Karoo. The name is literal: the founders converted an old farm shed that used to house six dogs, welded a copper water-geyser into a still, and made their first batch there in 2013. The dogs hung around watching. Blue was South Africa's first blue gin, and the colour comes entirely from the blue pea flower (Clitoria ternatea), nothing artificial.
Good to know
- What is the price of Six Dogs Blue Gin 750ml?
Six Dogs Blue Gin 750ml is KSh 6,399 at Oaks & Corks. Order online for fast delivery across Nairobi, usually within the hour, or next day countrywide.
- What does Six Dogs Blue Gin taste like?
A smooth, aromatic dry gin. Juniper and citrus up front, then a soft rose-floral note from pelargonium and an earthy, cut-grass character from the blue pea flower. Dry finish, never sweet.
- Why does it change colour?
The blue pea flower reacts to pH. Tonic and lemon are acidic, so the moment you add them the natural blue shifts to a light pink. No additives, just the flower doing its thing.
- What is the ABV of Six Dogs Blue Gin?
43% ABV, in a 750ml bottle. A touch stronger than a standard 40%, which helps the botanicals carry through a mixer.
- How do I serve it?
As a G&T over plenty of ice in a big glass. Pour the gin first to enjoy the blue, then add chilled tonic and watch it turn pink. A light citrus garnish finishes it.
- Where is it from?
South Africa, from Six Dogs Distillery in the De Wet valley near Robertson in the Western Cape.
- Is the blue colour artificial?
No. It's entirely natural, infused from the blue pea flower (Clitoria ternatea). No artificial colourants.
