Opstal Sixpense Sauvignon Blanc-Semilion75cl
★★★★ 4.0 (1 review)You know that white that just makes everything lighter? This is it. Pour it cold and you get a hit of citrus and passion fruit up front, then a softer, rounder finish that stops it being sharp. It's dry, it's bright, and it gets along with pretty much anything you put next to it. Grilled fish, a lazy Friday, friends turning up unannounced. Say the word and we'll have it at your door, ice not included but you've got a freezer.
First sniff is all sunshine: melon, passion fruit, guava and a squeeze of citrus, with a little white-flower lift on top. That's the Sauvignon Blanc doing its zesty thing. Then the Sémillon steps in and rounds the edges, so instead of a sharp, lean sip you get something fuller and softer through the middle. Finishes clean and dry, with just enough zing to make you want the next mouthful. Nothing sweet, nothing heavy. Just fresh and moreish.
The details
Pairs well with
Where it's from
Opstal Estate sits at the head of the Slanghoek Valley in the Breedekloof district, between two mountain ranges, and the same family has farmed this land since 1847. The Sixpence name is the cool part. It honours Daniel 'Sixpence' Smiles, a shepherd who watched the flocks here back in the 1950s and 60s, and the generations of farmworkers who've kept the place going. The vineyards now sit on what used to be his grazing land, and a slice of the range's profit still goes back to the farm's workers and to local conservation. A genuinely nice story behind a genuinely easy bottle.
