Stick your nose in and it's perfumed and sunny: soft tropical fruit with a green streak of cut grass and herbs running through it. The sip is where it earns its name, fresh and racy, a little stampede of gooseberry, green pineapple and citrus. It's bone dry, so don't expect sweetness. Expect a clean, zingy zip that makes your mouth water and pulls you straight back for the next sip. Light on its feet, easy to drink, never heavy.

Tall Horse comes out of South Africa's Western Cape, made at the cellars in Wellington by winemaker Jaco Potgieter, a Cape man through and through. The fruit is fermented dry in stainless steel at a cool 13°C, then left to rest on its lees before bottling, which is what gives it that fresh, layered lift. And the name? It's a nod to the giraffe. Back when these long-necked giants first stunned the world, they got nicknamed the 'tall horse' and were sent as royal gifts to faraway kings to delight and surprise them. Same energy in the bottle, basically. A little wild, a lot of fun.
